Washing starts with the right shampoo
Washing-up liquid is the classic mistake: it strips not only dirt but also the wax protecting your paint. A pH-neutral car shampoo cleans without attacking that layer. Work top to bottom using two buckets — one with shampoo, one to rinse your mitt — so you don't drag grit across the paint.
Clay, polish and wax: separate steps
If the paint feels rough after washing, there's bonded contamination to remove with a clay bar or clay cloth. Polish removes light scratches and dullness by abrading a minimal layer of clear coat. Wax or sealant is the protective layer that follows. In that order: clean, correct, protect. Wax over dirty paint simply seals the dirt in.
Coatings last longest
Where a carnauba wax lasts a few months, a ceramic coating holds up for a year or more and gives a strongly water-repellent finish. Preparation is critical: the paint must be completely clean and degreased, or you'll seal in contamination. Ask at the counter and we'll explain what's involved.
Interior, wheels and glass
Also wheel cleaner, tar remover, bug remover, leather cleaner, plastic care, glass cleaner and microfibre cloths. People often economise on cloths, yet a cheap cloth is exactly what causes scratches.

- Where do I start if I have nothing?
- A pH-neutral shampoo, two buckets, a good wash mitt and a few microfibre cloths. That gets you further than an expensive wax on a badly washed car.
- What's the difference between wax and a coating?
- Wax gives deep gloss and lasts a few months. A ceramic coating lasts a year or more and repels water more strongly, but demands more preparation.
- Does polish remove scratches?
- Light scratches in the clear coat, yes. Scratches you can feel with a fingernail go through the paint and can't be polished out.
