Oil, air, cabin and fuel filters
Filters are cheap and therefore often forgotten, yet a clogged filter is immediately noticeable: less power, higher fuel use, or a musty smell from the vents. Almost every car has four, each with its own job and interval.
Oil filter
Catches metal particles and soot from the engine oil. Always replaced together with the oil — pumping fresh oil through an old filter is pointless. Modern engines usually take a paper cartridge in a housing; older ones a spin-on filter.
Air filter
Keeps dust and insects out of the engine. When it clogs, the engine gets too little air: you'll notice power loss and higher consumption. Driving on dusty roads means replacing it more often. It's one of the few parts you can often change yourself.
Cabin or pollen filter
Filters the air you breathe through the ventilation. This is the most-skipped filter and the one you notice most: a musty smell when switching on the air conditioning almost always comes from a saturated cabin filter. Activated carbon versions exist for hay fever sufferers. Annual replacement is the advice.
Fuel filter
Particularly important on diesels. A clogged fuel filter causes power loss, poor starting and in the worst case injection damage. Diesel filters often include a water separator.
