Engine oil and lubricants
Engine oil is where the wrong choice is made most often, because the packaging tells you little. What matters is the specification the manufacturer requires — and that varies by engine, not by car brand. We're a Liqui Moly specialist and match the right oil to your engine code.
Viscosity: what does 5W-30 mean?
The first number with the W (winter) describes how thin the oil is on a cold start: lower means it circulates faster in freezing weather. The second number is the thickness at operating temperature. Modern engines with narrow oil galleries often need 0W-20 or 5W-30; older engines want 10W-40. Oil that's too thick in a modern engine means poor lubrication on cold starts — exactly where most wear happens.
The specification matters more than the viscosity
Next to 5W-30 you'll see something like VW 504.00, MB 229.51, BMW LL-04 or ACEA C3. These are manufacturer approvals and they're binding — especially on cars with a particulate filter, where the wrong oil can clog it permanently. If your car is still under warranty, the correct specification is a condition of that warranty.
Additives: when they help and when they don't
Liqui Moly offers a broad additive range: injector cleaners, oil leak stop, DPF cleaner, gearbox additives. Some work demonstrably, others only make sense for a specific problem. We'd rather sell you nothing than something that won't fix your complaint — tell us what you notice and we'll say whether there's a product for it.
More than engine oil
We also stock gearbox oil, ATF for automatics, brake fluid, coolant, screenwash and greases. The same applies: specifications matter, particularly for automatic transmissions.

- Which oil does my car need?
- Send your licence plate on WhatsApp. It tells us the engine code and therefore the required viscosity and specification.
- Can I mix different oil brands?
- Preferably not, but topping up with the same viscosity and specification does no harm if you're low on the road. Do a full change at the next service.
- How often should oil be changed?
- It varies: usually every 15,000 to 30,000 km or annually. Lots of short trips means changing more often is wise.
